SUMMARY OF THE
2000 REACT INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION

NOTE: This Summary is a brief overview of the Convention happenings, Awards and Statistics.
Information of what took place in the General and Open Board Meetings will be in the
Minutes prepared by Lee Besing, REACT International Secretary.
The 2000 REACT International Convention was held on
July 26-28th at the Ramada Plaza Hotel Gateway in Kissimmee Florida.
The total attendance was 123, which included 34 Life Members, 12 Junior
REACTers and approximately 25 Amateurs.
There were 7 Members from Canada and 8 from Trinidad-Tobago
Further most distance traveled: C.C. Roberts from Honolulu REACT Team HI
Photographs were taken of the entire Group, Life Members, Amateurs and the

WEDNESDAY 26 July 2000
OPENING CEREMONIES.
The Flags representing Teams from the USA, Canada,
Trinidad-Tobago, Puerto Rico, United Kingdom, Germany and the REACT
International Flag were posted by the Junior REACTers. The Invocation was
given by Paul Jones, Life Member #463, from Lakeland FL.
A Welcome was given by Mayor Frank Atkinson of Kissimmee FL. A Welcome
was also given by Andrew Schiavone, General Manager and John Allen, Sales
Manager of the Ramada Plaza Hotel Gateway. A presentation was given on
the Lake Buena Vista Factory Outlet Stores by Judy Alexander. She
mentioned that they had a 75% off sale plus the State Moritorium on Sales
Taxes for that weekend.
AWARDS at the Opening Ceremony:
Life Memberships were given to Karen Power, #547, Eric Power, #548 and Bob
Bodine, #549, for their dedication to REACT for over 10 years, plus their
invaluable personal friendship to Walt over the years. The Awards were
obtained and given personally by Walt Young, LM 501.
A Life Membership given to Sallyann Knott, #570, of Orlando Metro REACT , by
the 2000 Convention Committee. Sallyann was recognized for her tireless
efforts and hard work as Chairman of several Convention Committees,
Chairman of the REACT International Ways and Means Committee and her
dedication to REACT over many years.
EXHIBITERS
ARRL, The American Radio Relay League was represented by Phyllisan West,
Southern Florida ARRL Section Manager. They had many items on Display as
well as items for Sale by TEDCO Electronics of Melbourne, an ARRL
Distributor.
REACT International had their "Country Store" selling many REACT items
that are normally available from Headquarters.
The lady doing the Convention Shirts (and other items) was unable to
attend due to her printer expiring. She obtained a new one but not in
time to attend. However, orders were taken at the Convention and she will
make the shirts and ship them to the individuals. The shirts look better
than ever with good bright colors on the logos.
MASSAGE
Lane Sherman, a licensed Masseuse, provided Massage Therapy for
all the tired bones, Wednesday through Friday in the Hospitality Room.
THURSDAY 27 July 2000
An Amateur Breakfast and Meeting was held Thursday morning with 17
Amateurs and 2 visitors in attendance.
A Life Member Luncheon and Meeting was held Thursday with 34 Life Members
(including the 4 new ones) in attendance.
WORKSHOPS/SEMINARS:
The First Timer Orientation was given by Life Member #463 Paul Jones from
Lakeland FL. He gave an overview of many REACT conventions and what their
purpose is as well as activities to all those who have attended their
first Convention.
CERTS (Community Emergency Response Team) was given by Mary Alicia
Johnson. CERTS is a group that is organized and receives special training
that enhances their ability to recognize, respond to, and recover from a
major emergency or disaster situation.
Rapid Response Seminar, by John Knott, John Fisken, and Robert Lumpkin.
An update on the REACT International Rapid Response Program, its future
and how they plan to expand Nationwide.
DCAT (Disaster Communications Assistance Team) given by Chris Myers of
the Florida State DCAT REACT Team 6000 from Vero Beach FL. This is a
totally self contained Unit that can be setup anywhere and operate during
severe disasters, including a tower, generator, repeaters, Satellite
weather monitoring, Satellite tracking, and radios to serve all
frequencies. After explaining how the Team works and the equipment
contained in it, he then gave a tour of his Van and trailer.
A Junior REACT workshop by Linda Faulkner, Tammy Brown and Katalin Power,
on how to setup Junior REACT in your Team, Training and Programs.
DISPLAYS:
Cobra Radio came with their new Class A motor home/display unit. Hosted
by Jan and Bill Thurling.
Florida State DCAT Van and Trailer (see above) was on Display all week.
TIME CAPSULE CEREMONY:
The Time Capsule Ceremony was held Thursday Evening. Items were to be
placed in the capsule, sealed then turned over to REACT International to
be opened sometime in the Future. It was then decided by the Members
attending to reopen the capsule at the 50th Anniversary REACT
International Convention in 2012.
Teams and Councils brought items to place in the capsule. There were so
many items brought that they are enlarging the capsule before shipping it
to REACT International.

FRIDAY 28 July 2000
FCC Seminar: Mr Riley Hollingsworth, Special Counsel,
Enforcement Bureau, Federal Communications Commission, Gettysburg
PA. he spoke on Trustee (Ownership) of Repeaters, particularly GMRS
repeaters, and the responsibility of their owners. He stressed that
Repeater Owners still have the right to control who uses their repeaters.
He held a Question and Answer session following his presentation.
Banquet Speaker: Mr Craig Fugate, Bureau Chief, Florida Division
of Emergency Management, Tallahassee FL. He spoke on Emergency
Communications throughout the State, how sometimes under certain
circumstance they can fail. Therefore, backup communications from other
Groups, such as REACT , can be invaluable during disasters.

AMATEUR TESTING

General and one passed his Tech.
